Last night, America's working families were breathtakingly inspired by Barack Obama's speech accepting the Democratic presidential nomination. Hours later, presumptive Republican nominee John McCain failed to repair his anti-worker record by announcing his running mate.
Although Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin lacks the foreign policy expertise and national stature of Obama's running mate, Sen. Joe Biden, we have no reason to doubt she is a sincere public servant. But that does not change the danger for working families of a McCain presidency. McCain has shown again and again that he would bring America more of the same Bush policies that have driven working families out of jobs, out of health care, out of the middle class and into debt and foreclosure.
Plain and simply, working families cannot afford four more years of Bush-McCain politics.
Appearing today with McCain, Gov. Palin was quick to note her husband's membership in the United Steelworkers (USW). Ironically, she has joined the ticket of a staunch opponent of restoring the freedom of other working men and women to form unions and bargain for a better life. McCain was among the Republican senators who blocked a vote on the Employee Free Choice Act last year after the House approved the measure. Enactment of the Employee Free Choice Act is a critical step in rebuilding America's middle class.
The choice between the Obama-Biden and McCain-Palin tickets is clear for working women and men, who know from their day-to-day experiences and kitchen table choices that it is time for change—time to turn around America.
